Hawthorne and 12th Food Carts

Greatest french fries ever and such a cool vibe. We went on the"early"side - about 9 pm. It is really hopping (or so I am told) when the clubs let out. You can see the big wooden tables that everyone shares. There are heat lamps when it is really cold and an awning to keep most of the rain out. But mainly you are there to eat fried food with no shame!
French fries come in a cone with your choice of dipping sauces - we got remoulade and horseradish ketchup - definitely addictive and sinus clearing. But you can't stop there. You have to go on to the Fried Pie Cart,Whiffie's fried pies are the best thing since those Hostess fruit pies you loved in grade school when your mom put them in your lunch cause she didn't have anything else to give you as a special treat and your dad had stopped at 7-11 and bought these "god-awful" desserts (according to your mom). Now I never ate the Hostess pies but I love Whiffies! Here I am fighting with Ella for a bite. Can't wait to go back for more. We had cherry this time but might go for apple next. There is also a Creperie which is open day and night and it looked really enticing with both sweet and savory crepes like walnut + honey + cardamom + coriander.
My theory about Portland and food is evolving but it follow the lines of - if you have really rainy weather a lot of the time you would go mad if you didn't get out of the house every day - and what will get you out of the house at any time of day or night without fail ? FOOD! And at the food carts it will cost you around $5.
